SUMMARY:Mental Health Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Today is the start of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek\nThis week runs from the 12th to 18th May and was started by The Mental Health Foundation. It provides an opportunity for the UK to focus on achieving good mental health\, and to raise awareness for mental health issues. \nThe theme for 2025 is ‘Community’.\nBeing part of a safe\, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us\, we are not alone. \nCommunities can provide us with a sense of belonging\, safety\, support in hard times\, and give us purpose. \nSo\, this Mental Health Awareness Week we want to celebrate the communities that support us to protect and nurture good mental health. \nSource: Mental Health Awareness Week | Mental Health Foundation

SUMMARY:World Lupus Day
DESCRIPTION:World Lupus Day serves to call attention to the impact that #Lupus has on people around the world. \nEvery day\, more than 5 million people worldwide struggle with the often debilitating health consequences of lupus\, a potentially fatal autoimmune disease capable of damaging virtually any part of the body\, including the skin\, heart\, lungs\, kidneys\, and brain. #Lupus affects people in all parts of the world. While some groups of people develop lupus more frequently than others\, lupus develops in people of all ages\, races\, ethnicities and genders. \nThe annual observance focuses on the need for improved patient healthcare services\, increased research into the causes of and cure for lupus\, earlier diagnosis and treatment of lupus\, and better epidemiological data on lupus globally. #WorldLupusDay serves to rally lupus organisations and people affected by the disease around the world for a common purpose of bringing greater attention and resources to efforts to end the suffering caused by this disabling and potentially fatal autoimmune disease. \n#WorldLupusDay \nSource:  About – World Lupus Day

SUMMARY:World Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:World Ovarian Cancer Day is observed on May 8th every year. The day is observed worldwide to raise awareness about #OvarianCancer and acknowledge the suffering of people with ovarian cancer and the efforts of their families. \nOvarian cancer begins in the ovaries and spreads to other organs\, including the lungs\, stomach\, lymph nodes\, and liver. Cancer is usually diagnosed when symptoms like pelvic pain\, bloating\, constipation\, and loss of appetite are observed in patients. \nEarly symptoms of ovarian cancer are usually subtle\, which leads to a long wait time before the disease is diagnosed. Doctors aim to eliminate other factors and potential causes before considering cancer\, as screening may lead to a false positive and unnecessary surgery. The surgery comes with its own risks and is avoided unless consulting doctors believe with some measure of certainty that their patient could have ovarian cancer. \nOvarian cancer advocacy organizations use the day to raise their voices in solidarity with patients and work against ovarian cancer. \n  \n  \n  \nSource: WORLD OVARIAN CANCER DAY – May 8\, 2025 – National Today

SUMMARY:World Asthma Day
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of World Asthma Day 2025\, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has chosen the theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”. GINA emphasizes the need to ensure that people with #Asthma can access inhaled medications that are essential both for controlling the underlying disease and treating attacks. \nAsthma attacks cause great distress for sufferers and their careers\, and these attacks may result in hospital admission and\, in some cases\, death. Inhaled corticosteroid-containing medications prevent asthma attacks by treating the underlying inflammation that causes asthma. \nDoctors and allied health care professionals are called upon to ensure that every person with asthma is prescribed evidence-based\, essential\, inhaled corticosteroid-containing medication in addition to (or in combination with) reliever medication\, to prevent the continuing avoidable morbidity and mortality from asthma. \nAsthma is one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases that affects over 260 million people and is responsible for over 450\,000 deaths each year worldwide. Most of these deaths are preventable. \nIn low-middle-income countries\, lack of availability or high cost of inhaled medicines\, especially inhaled corticosteroid-containing inhalers\, are major contributors to the fact that 96% of global asthma deaths occur in these countries. \nEven in high income countries\, high costs can mean that many people with asthma have limited access to essential inhaled medicines\, resulting in poorly controlled asthma and preventable asthma deaths. \nPolicy makers\, governments\, payers\, and pharmaceutical industry manufacturers and suppliers are called upon to increase their awareness of the continuing preventable morbidity and mortality associated with asthma in spite of the existence of evidence based\, highly effective management of asthma. \nWe call on everyone to increase their efforts to “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”\, in all countries throughout the world. \nSource:  World Asthma Day 2025 – Global Initiative for Asthma – GINA \n  \n

SUMMARY:Deaf Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Deaf Awareness Week runs  5th – 11th May 2025\nThe theme for Deaf Awareness Week 2025 in the UK is “Beyond Silence.” This powerful theme highlights the importance of looking beyond the common misconceptions about deafness and recognising the rich experiences\, identities\, and contributions of Deaf individuals in society. \n“Beyond Silence” encourages greater understanding of the diverse ways in which Deaf and hard-of-hearing people communicate\, from British Sign Language (BSL) to lip-reading\, written communication\, and assistive technology. It also sheds light on the social\, cultural\, and professional barriers that many Deaf individuals face\, advocating for improved accessibility\, inclusivity\, and equal opportunities. \nThis year’s campaign calls on individuals\, organisations\, and communities to go beyond simply acknowledging deafness and actively work towards meaningful change. By promoting BSL learning\, improving workplace accessibility\, ensuring equal access to education\, and fostering more inclusive public spaces\, we can build a society where Deaf people are truly heard\, valued\, and empowered. \nDeaf Awareness Week 2025 is an opportunity for everyone to reflect\, learn\, and take action—because inclusion goes beyond just breaking the silence; it’s about amplifying voices\, stories\, and rights. \nHappy Deaf Awareness Week 2025 ! \n#BeyondSilence \nSource:  Deaf Awareness Week – Deafness Resource Centre \n

SUMMARY:Children's Book Week 2
DESCRIPTION:Children’s Book Week is an annual celebration of reading for pleasure for children of primary school age. A fantastic opportunity for extended teaching on any of your favourite children’s books! This year\, 2024\, marks the 100th Anniversary of Children’s Book Week and the theme is “How Do You Book?”. \nWhen is Children’s Book Week?\nThere are technically no set dates for Children’s Book Week\, meaning you’re free to celebrate this whenever suits you! However\, in the UK\, this year the event takes place over two weeks: the 6th to 12th of May and the 4th to 10th of November. Join in the celebrations with our friends across the pond\, or tie in your Children’s Book Week celebrations around World Book Day. \nWhen did Children’s Book Week start?\nThe idea for this event was conceived by Franklin K. Matthiews\, the librarian of the Boy Scouts of America\, in 1913. He thought that a celebration of children’s books would help get more children into reading\, helped by the backing of publishers\, booksellers and librarians in the US. Now going on for over 100 years\, Children’s Book Week continues to grow in popularity year on year. \nHow can I get involved with Children’s Book Week?\nSimple. Get reading! There are so many fantastic children’s books available in libraries and bookshops that it can be difficult to know where to start your search for some great children’s literature. \n#HowDoYouBook #Literacy #ReadingForJoy #FavouriteBooks \n  \nSource: Children’s Book Week 2024 – Event Info and Resources (twinkl.co.uk)

SUMMARY:Cavernoma Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:Cavernoma Awareness Day 2024 is on 21st August and aims to increase knowledge of how to spot its symptoms\, understand its causes\, and spread more awareness across your friend groups and workplace organisations. \nIn order to assist in raising the profile surrounding this condition\, it’s important to have as much information at hand as possible. Here’s what you need to know about Cavernoma Awareness Day to do your part and participate this year. \nWhat is Cavernoma?\nCavernoma refers to groups of abnormal blood vessels that form in clusters in the spinal cord and brain. Cavernomas contain blood which travels slowly through these vessels\, usually clotting. The look and shape of a Cavernoma resembles a raspberry and can range from a few millimetres to a few centimetres in size. \nWhat are the Symptoms of Cavernoma?\nSpotting the signs and symptoms of Cavernoma can be difficult as they tend to vary from person to person. The size of the Cavernoma and its location can also cause these symptoms to vary. Generally speaking\, these are some of the most notable Cavernoma symptoms: \n\nSeizures or severely painful headaches\nIssues with memory and concentration\nIssues with keeping your balance\nTinnitus and difficulty hearing\nBlurred or double vision\nDizziness and fatigue\nDrooping in the face\nDifficulty talking\nNumbness\n\nHow is Cavernoma Treated?\nFor some cases\, Cavernoma will predominantly be treated and controlled with medications\, especially in the case of extreme headaches and seizures. In more extreme cases where there’s a risk of haemorrhage and heavy bleeding\, further steps will most likely be taken in the form of surgical treatment or radiation in the event of surgery being deemed too dangerous. \nHowever\, it’s important to remember that each Cavernoma case will be unique\, and that treatment methods will vary depending on several different factors. \nWhether you or someone you know may have #Cavernoma\, or you’re just eager to help raise as much awareness as possible\, sharing this knowledge is the best way to do your part this year. \n  \nSource: (1) New Messages! SUMMARY:Cervical Screening Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, during Cervical Screening Awareness Week Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust raise awareness and share information about cervical screening (smear tests) including tips\, experiences\, and they work with experts to help those who find cervical screening difficult. \nThey want every woman and person with a cervix to know where they can get information and support about cervical screening\, and need your help to make sure this is shared far and wide! \nStatistics show that 1 in 3 people don’t go to their cervical screening appointment due to embarrassment or fear. There’s a lot of built-up stigma around the test\, but it’s one that’s vitally important. \n  \n#SmearTest #WomensHealth #CervicalScreeningAwarenessWeek  #CSAW24 \n  \nSource: Cervical Screening Awareness Week | Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust (jostrust.org.uk)

SUMMARY:Chinese New Year
DESCRIPTION:Chinese New Year 2024 will take place on the 10th of February\, with the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. Celebrations will last from the 9th of February (New Year’s Eve) until the 15th day of the New Year. \nWhat is The Chinese New Year calendar?\nEach year (also known as a cycle) of the Chinese New Year calendar is represented by a different zodiac animal. There are 12 in total. According to legend\, these 12 animals participated in a race\, which then determined their place of order in the Chinese New Year calendar. \nWhy is Chinese New Year celebrated?\nChinese New Year\, also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival\, marks the first day of the New Year in the Chinese traditional calendar\, which is a lunisolar calendar. Unlike the Gregorian calendar\, used widely around the world today\, the lunisolar calendar determines dates using the location of the sun and the moon relative to the Earth. This is why\, on our Western calendars\, the date changes each year! \nIt is one of the most important events in Chinese culture and the holiday is today celebrated all around the world. Many other countries celebrate the holiday as an official festival (Korea\, Vietnam\, Singapore\, Malaysia\, Indonesia and the Philippines) due to its cultural significance. \nWhat are some Chinese New Year traditions?\nTraditionally\, Chinese New Year is a time for people to honour their ancestors and deities. Still\, many of the customs and traditions of the holiday vary wildly from region to region. Many families across China gather the night before Chinese New Year’s Day for a festive dinner to reunite them. Many people will also clean their house before the new year; this is done to cleanse any ill fortune and is thought to allow for good luck going into the new year. \nIt is also customary for people to decorate their windows and doors with red decorations\, as red is seen as a lucky colour in Chinese culture. Many also light firecrackers and gift money in red paper envelopes to celebrate! \n  \n#ChineseNewYear #YearOfTheDragon \nChinese New Year – Wikipedia

SUMMARY:National Grandparent's Day
DESCRIPTION:According to the National Grandparents Day website\, the aim of National Grandparents Day is: \nTo honour grandparents \n\nTo give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children\nTo help children become aware of the strength\, information and guidance older people can offer\n\nIn the UK Grandparents’ Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of October each year. \nWhat to do on Grandparents’ Day? \n\nHonour the grandparents/grandchild relationships. If you can you should try to spend some time together. Below are 10 ideas of things you could do together:\nMake something especially for your grandparents (for example a picture\, a poem\, a treat)\nGet them to pass on knowledge (learn how to bake your favourite cake\, learn how to cross-stitch\, catch a fish or use a hammer)\nInterview them (ask them all the questions you’d like answers to about their amazing lives!)\nHave a sleepover and watch a film of their choice\nGet them to play cards with you (grandparents are often full of fun ideas when it comes to card games)\nMake a family tree with photos or hand-drawn images of family members\nSwitch roles! (be a grandparent for a day\, let them relax and you do all the pampering they usually do)\nOffer to do tasks around the house/garden\nMake a card and list why you admire them\nGet them to show you old photo albums and tell you all the stories behind the pictures\n\nThese are only a few ideas we came up with. You might want to do something completely different on Grandparents’ Day\, something that’s special to you and your grandparents. \nFind Out More: Grandparents’ Day 2023 – Teaching Resources and Information (twinkl.co.uk)
