SUMMARY:International Self-Care Day
DESCRIPTION:Every year on July 24th\, International Self Care Day promotes self-care as a vital foundation of health. It’s also a day for people around the world to prioritise self-care and make it a part of their lifestyle. \nWhen you take care of yourself to stay well\, you are practicing #SelfCare. Staying well includes taking care of your whole self: physically\, mentally\, and emotionally. For some\, self-care also includes taking care of themselves spiritually. So what exactly does self-care look like? It could be as simple as having some quiet time each day. Others might have coffee with a friend at least once a week. \nOther examples of self-care include: \n\nHaving a regular sleep routine\nMaintaining a healthy weight\nKeeping a reflective journal\nPracticing gratitude\nGetting a massage\nListening to relaxing music\nReading a good book\nLearning to say no\nAsking for help when necessary\n\nThere are other areas of self-care that some focus on as well. For example\, financial self-care involves paying bills on time and putting money into savings. Monitoring time on social media and decluttering your home are included in environmental self-care. \nNo matter what kind of self-care one practices\, one is bound to reap benefits. Having a healthier mind and body are the two primary benefits. Other benefits of self-care include feeling less stressed and being less overwhelmed. Self-care is especially important for caregivers. It’s easy for a caregiver to pour all of their time and energy into another person. Doing so eventually takes its toll. As the saying goes\, “You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.” \nSource: INTERNATIONAL SELF CARE DAY – July 24 – National Day Calendar

SUMMARY:Nelson Mandela International Day
DESCRIPTION:Nelson Mandela has many accolades. He’s  an iconic figure that triumphed over South Africa’s apartheid regime. He was a human rights lawyer\, a prisoner of conscience\, and an international peacemaker. And he was the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa (no biggie). \nSo you see why the United Nations General Assembly would want to celebrate his life. \nCommemorated on July 18 — Nelson Mandela’s birthday — Nelson Mandela International Day celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact. So\, in honour of his 67 years of public service\, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the U.N. ask that you spend 67 minutes of your time helping others. \nSource: NELSON MANDELA DAY – July 18\, 2025 – National Today

SUMMARY:National Give Something Away Day
DESCRIPTION:Imagine a day when you could clean house and get rid of clutter\, show someone that you care\, gift small things to strangers\, and generally making the world a better place. Yes\, this day does\, in fact\, exist and on July 15 we celebrate National Give Something Away Day! \nIt’s better to give than to receive\, and this is the aim behind #NationalGiveSomethingAwayDay. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” doesn’t literally mean junk or trash\, but items that can serve someone else better. The day encourages people to give freely to others without expecting anything in return. This is also a good way to declutter and pass on things that no longer fit us or are useful to us. \nMost of us undoubtedly have way more items than we need. National Give Something Away Day was established on July 15\, 2015\, by Linda Eaton Hall-Fulcher\, a self-proclaimed giver. Linda advocates giving back to the world. According to her\, this day is for everyone who cares. It advocates for giving to friends\, family\, and the less fortunate; for #MindfulConsumerism; and for being more aware of our #CarbonFootprint. \nGiving is the simplest act to exist that can brighten up another’s day\, and at times really bring about a positive change. Whether it is something small like giving a compliment\, giving your friend a jacket of yours that she really likes\, or donating clothes to the less fortunate\, these little things can have a big impact. \nEven though giving is a selfless act\, the reward goes both ways. We benefit from feeling good about giving and making someone’s day\, and at the same time\, we also let go of items that we no longer need and are just lying around. We also learn to be grateful for all our blessings and it makes us feel like responsible people who are improving the community. \n  \nSource:National Give Something Away Day (nationaltoday.com)

SUMMARY:World Chocolate Day
DESCRIPTION:World Chocolate Day is sometimes referred to as International Chocolate Day. \nIt takes place on 7 July every year\, and put simply\, it’s a celebration of all things chocolate! The event was created in 2009. In some countries around the world\, the day is celebrated on different dates. But July 7 was chosen for World Chocolate Day because this day is thought to be around the time that chocolate was introduced to European countries. It quickly became a favourite treat in South Africa and across the world! \nThere are all sorts of different ways that you can celebrate World Chocolate Day.  The most obvious is by tucking into some chocolate\, but what if you’re after some more outside the (chocolate) box ideas? \nWhy not bake some delicious chocolate chip cookies with your kids\, or watch “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” movie with your family. Or find some fun facts and the history around chocolate? \nSource: World Chocolate Day 2025 | 7th July | Twinkl – Twinkl

It reminds us of the importance of saying “thank you” and the positive impact it can have on relationships and communities. SUMMARY:World Oceans Day
DESCRIPTION:World Oceans Day is celebrated on 8 June. \nWe currently face one of the greatest threats ever to our blue planet and all its inhabitants: the climate crisis. It is all too clear that we need a healthy ocean for a healthy climate\, and vice versa\, and we need significantly stronger local\, national\, and international action from both government and corporate leaders. Now.    \nFor 2025\, we are launching a new multi-year action theme: Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate. By growing the movement through transformative collaboration\, we aim to create not only a healthy blue planet\, but also a more just\, equitable and sustainable society.   \nTogether\, we can persuade national legislators and corporate leaders to follow through on their promises and all the big talk about doing the right thing\, specifically:   \n\nmake the best use of all existing climate solutions;  \naccelerate a just transition to clean and renewable energy;  \nstop fossil fuel extraction\, including oil\, gas and coal; \nrapidly and equitably phase out its existing production including for single use plastics;\ncollaborate with and amplify the voices of local leaders who are working to implement action within their communities; \nprotect and restore natural coastal and ocean ecosystems (and on land) by creating strongly protected areas covering at least 30% of our lands and waters by 2030;  and\nkeep on creating more solutions at the local\, national and international levels that are based on the best science\n\nBy collaborating in transformative ways\, we can create a healthier and more abundant future for all.  \nSee:  World Ocean Day – Uniting Ocean Action Worldwide on 8 June Every Year \n

DESCRIPTION:It’s World Hunger Day on 28th May. \n\n\n\n\nClimate change intensifies extreme weather events—such as droughts\, floods\, and heatwaves—that disrupt agricultural production\, leading to reduced crop yields and increased food prices. As food prices rise\, nutritious diets become less affordable\, especially for vulnerable populations. In 2022\, over 343 million people across 74 countries experienced acute food insecurity\, a situation exacerbated by climate-induced supply chain disruptions. \nHunger and climate change are deeply interconnected.   \n\n\n\n\nThis World Hunger Day\, we’re focusing on how combating climate change can ensure food security for all. By investing in farmers\, we can create a world where healthy food is accessible\, and communities thrive. \n#WorldHungerDay #GoodNutrition #SowingResiliance \n  \nSource & Find Out More: http://worldhungerday.org/

SUMMARY:World Lupus Day
DESCRIPTION:World Lupus Day serves to call attention to the impact that #Lupus has on people around the world. \nEvery day\, more than 5 million people worldwide struggle with the often debilitating health consequences of lupus\, a potentially fatal autoimmune disease capable of damaging virtually any part of the body\, including the skin\, heart\, lungs\, kidneys\, and brain. #Lupus affects people in all parts of the world. While some groups of people develop lupus more frequently than others\, lupus develops in people of all ages\, races\, ethnicities and genders. \nThe annual observance focuses on the need for improved patient healthcare services\, increased research into the causes of and cure for lupus\, earlier diagnosis and treatment of lupus\, and better epidemiological data on lupus globally. #WorldLupusDay serves to rally lupus organisations and people affected by the disease around the world for a common purpose of bringing greater attention and resources to efforts to end the suffering caused by this disabling and potentially fatal autoimmune disease. \n#WorldLupusDay \nSource:  About – World Lupus Day

SUMMARY:World Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:World Ovarian Cancer Day is observed on May 8th every year. The day is observed worldwide to raise awareness about #OvarianCancer and acknowledge the suffering of people with ovarian cancer and the efforts of their families. \nOvarian cancer begins in the ovaries and spreads to other organs\, including the lungs\, stomach\, lymph nodes\, and liver. Cancer is usually diagnosed when symptoms like pelvic pain\, bloating\, constipation\, and loss of appetite are observed in patients. \nEarly symptoms of ovarian cancer are usually subtle\, which leads to a long wait time before the disease is diagnosed. Doctors aim to eliminate other factors and potential causes before considering cancer\, as screening may lead to a false positive and unnecessary surgery. The surgery comes with its own risks and is avoided unless consulting doctors believe with some measure of certainty that their patient could have ovarian cancer. \nOvarian cancer advocacy organizations use the day to raise their voices in solidarity with patients and work against ovarian cancer. \n  \n  \n  \nSource: WORLD OVARIAN CANCER DAY – May 8\, 2025 – National Today

SUMMARY:World Asthma Day
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of World Asthma Day 2025\, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has chosen the theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”. GINA emphasizes the need to ensure that people with #Asthma can access inhaled medications that are essential both for controlling the underlying disease and treating attacks. \nAsthma attacks cause great distress for sufferers and their careers\, and these attacks may result in hospital admission and\, in some cases\, death. Inhaled corticosteroid-containing medications prevent asthma attacks by treating the underlying inflammation that causes asthma. \nDoctors and allied health care professionals are called upon to ensure that every person with asthma is prescribed evidence-based\, essential\, inhaled corticosteroid-containing medication in addition to (or in combination with) reliever medication\, to prevent the continuing avoidable morbidity and mortality from asthma. \nAsthma is one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases that affects over 260 million people and is responsible for over 450\,000 deaths each year worldwide. Most of these deaths are preventable. \nIn low-middle-income countries\, lack of availability or high cost of inhaled medicines\, especially inhaled corticosteroid-containing inhalers\, are major contributors to the fact that 96% of global asthma deaths occur in these countries. \nEven in high income countries\, high costs can mean that many people with asthma have limited access to essential inhaled medicines\, resulting in poorly controlled asthma and preventable asthma deaths. \nPolicy makers\, governments\, payers\, and pharmaceutical industry manufacturers and suppliers are called upon to increase their awareness of the continuing preventable morbidity and mortality associated with asthma in spite of the existence of evidence based\, highly effective management of asthma. \nWe call on everyone to increase their efforts to “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”\, in all countries throughout the world. \nSource:  World Asthma Day 2025 – Global Initiative for Asthma – GINA \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cavernoma Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:Cavernoma Awareness Day 2024 is on 21st August and aims to increase knowledge of how to spot its symptoms\, understand its causes\, and spread more awareness across your friend groups and workplace organisations. \nIn order to assist in raising the profile surrounding this condition\, it’s important to have as much information at hand as possible. Here’s what you need to know about Cavernoma Awareness Day to do your part and participate this year. \nWhat is Cavernoma?\nCavernoma refers to groups of abnormal blood vessels that form in clusters in the spinal cord and brain. Cavernomas contain blood which travels slowly through these vessels\, usually clotting. The look and shape of a Cavernoma resembles a raspberry and can range from a few millimetres to a few centimetres in size. \nWhat are the Symptoms of Cavernoma?\nSpotting the signs and symptoms of Cavernoma can be difficult as they tend to vary from person to person. The size of the Cavernoma and its location can also cause these symptoms to vary. Generally speaking\, these are some of the most notable Cavernoma symptoms: \n\nSeizures or severely painful headaches\nIssues with memory and concentration\nIssues with keeping your balance\nTinnitus and difficulty hearing\nBlurred or double vision\nDizziness and fatigue\nDrooping in the face\nDifficulty talking\nNumbness\n\nHow is Cavernoma Treated?\nFor some cases\, Cavernoma will predominantly be treated and controlled with medications\, especially in the case of extreme headaches and seizures. In more extreme cases where there’s a risk of haemorrhage and heavy bleeding\, further steps will most likely be taken in the form of surgical treatment or radiation in the event of surgery being deemed too dangerous. \nHowever\, it’s important to remember that each Cavernoma case will be unique\, and that treatment methods will vary depending on several different factors. \nWhether you or someone you know may have #Cavernoma\, or you’re just eager to help raise as much awareness as possible\, sharing this knowledge is the best way to do your part this year. \n  \nSource: (1) New Messages! DESCRIPTION:According to the National Grandparents Day website\, the aim of National Grandparents Day is: \nTo honour grandparents \n\nTo give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children\nTo help children become aware of the strength\, information and guidance older people can offer\n\nIn the UK Grandparents’ Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of October each year. \nWhat to do on Grandparents’ Day? \n\nHonour the grandparents/grandchild relationships. If you can you should try to spend some time together. Below are 10 ideas of things you could do together:\nMake something especially for your grandparents (for example a picture\, a poem\, a treat)\nGet them to pass on knowledge (learn how to bake your favourite cake\, learn how to cross-stitch\, catch a fish or use a hammer)\nInterview them (ask them all the questions you’d like answers to about their amazing lives!)\nHave a sleepover and watch a film of their choice\nGet them to play cards with you (grandparents are often full of fun ideas when it comes to card games)\nMake a family tree with photos or hand-drawn images of family members\nSwitch roles! (be a grandparent for a day\, let them relax and you do all the pampering they usually do)\nOffer to do tasks around the house/garden\nMake a card and list why you admire them\nGet them to show you old photo albums and tell you all the stories behind the pictures\n\nThese are only a few ideas we came up with. You might want to do something completely different on Grandparents’ Day\, something that’s special to you and your grandparents. \nFind Out More: Grandparents’ Day 2023 – Teaching Resources and Information (twinkl.co.uk)
